Jamet
Background
Côte-Rôtie is the area in the northern Rhône widely acknowledged to be the site where the vine was first cultivated by the Romans. Located high above the town of Ampuis and the Rhône River, Domaine Jamet produces tiny quantities of stunning Côte-Rôtie. Bobby began working with Joseph Jamet in 1979, and his sons, Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc, now run the property. The work is divided between the two brothers, and over the past fifteen years Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul have done much to improve estate. The cave is now completely gravity fed, allowing them to make their wine without pushing the fruit or pumping the juice.
The Jamets have 6 hectares of vines averaging between 25 and 50 years old, and 3 more hectares of young vines recently planted. Yields are kept consistently low (35 hecto/ hectare), with 75% of fruit coming from the Côte Brune and 25% from the Côte Blonde.
This wine is 100 % Syrah and is partially destemmed, based on the vintage. Total elevage is almost two years before bottling, with at least 20 months in cask. 25% new , 25% one-year, 25% two-year & 25% three-year old oak barrels. This wine is bottled unfiltered.
Praised by critics for their outstanding terroirs and consistency in winemaking, Domaine Jamet stands proudly as one of the titans of the Côte-Rôtie. Farming 7 hectares in 20 parcels spread over 15 lieux-dits, they are fortunate to have holdings in both the schist soils of the Côte Brune and the granite soils of the Côte Blonde. The Jamets vinify each parcel separately, and to achieve harmony in the final assemblage, they balance the proportion of grapes from the windy upper slopes that are higher in acidity with grapes from riper, sun-soaked mid-slopes.
