Domaine Michel Niellon

Domaine Michel Niellon

Michel Niellon, who began working with his father Marcel in 1957, has crafted more than 50 vintages of extraordinary wines.  Domaine bottling started in teh 1960's, and their 4-hectares estate soon after found it's notoriety in the Burgundy wine world.

In 1991, Michel Coutoux married Francoise Niellon, Michel's daughter.  Originating from a wine family himself in the Loire VAlley, Coutoux has shared the vineyard and winemaking responsibilities since joining the family and Burgundy has become his life.

Mathieu Bresson, the son of Michel Niellon's second daughter, Chantal, became invovled with the Domaine about 10 years ago, after studying at the Lycee Vitcole in Beaune.  He brings a fourth generation into the winery.

Located in Chassagne Montrachet, the Domaine currently produces about 50,000 bottles of a dozen Appellations, ranging from Bourgonge Chardonnay to Premier and Grand Crus.  The wines are aged in oak barrels, 20-30% new, which match terror expression of the Domaine's wines.

Like many vignerons in urgundy, the vineyard work is done almost entirely by the family, inder the sustainable practice of 'lutte raisonnee'.  By planting finer clones in the last 25 years, as many as five per parcel, the balance and complexity of their wines has been elevated and further raised the already prestigious image of the Domaine.
