Vineyard Profile
  • The La Casuccia vineyard covers 12.58 hectares, six planted in 1978 and the rest in 2007. The plot has been terraced to improve aspecting and ensure more uniform ripening.  La Casuccia is split into nine parcels of land and in the best vintages it is typically parcel numbers 49, 46 and 45 which contribute to producing the limited quantities of this vineyard selection.

Harvest Notes
  • Climate: Frequent rains has characterized first months of 2013. The weather improved during the month of April with a rapid rise in temperature that has led the revival of vegetation. May cold as winter and rainy slowed all the work and the growth of vegetation that has been done about 15 days late. Summer finally came in the second half of July. Hot August days with beautiful light and sun. The first half of September was characterized by sunny days, while the second part of the month the maximum temperatures are lowered, leading to harvest the grapes early.
  • Harvest was entirely by hand, filling 10–12kg crates, followed by inspection on a sorting bench.
  • Vinification: fermentation was started using ambient yeasts, separately for each variety and in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30–33 °C, with manual pumpovers and total cuvaison of 26 days for the Sangiovese and 25 days for the Merlot. After first racking, the wine was transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation.
  • Maturation: assemblage of the two varieties took place after malolactic fermentation, then the wine was transferred to fine-grain oak barriques, of which 40% were new and the rest a year old.
  • The wine was bottled on 4 August 2015, producing 4,053 standard Bordeaux bottles, 100 magnums, and 35 double magnums.
Winemaker's Notes
  • Color: deep, dark ruby red, almost impenetrable, with crimson hues.
  • Nose: with fruity notes of red berries and forest berries, some spice suggesting vanilla pod, and tertiary notes of pipe tobacco and leather.
  • Mouth: stylish and delicate, with subtle but noticeable tannins. A mouth filling wine with a full flavor. Nicely juicy with a long finale.
